Source: How Stuff Works

Hot water can be obtained thanks to a system that heats the water to distribute it through the domestic or commercial water circuit and make it reach the supply points.

The presence of several supply points means that a sufficient flow of hot water is needed to meet all the demand in the house, so the boiler or water heater needs a good capacity to achieve an adequate supply of hot water for the whole house.

How does a hot water system works?

There are two main systems used for domestic water heating: a gas boiler and an electric water heater. The first uses gas as the heat source and the second uses an electrical resistance that heats up and makes the water hot. Solar energy can also be used in WA to power up your heating system!

Gas hot water

Gas water heaters are used to heat hot water for domestic use, using gas – either butane or natural gas. Installing a gas water heater will allow you to enjoy hot water generated almost instantly to cover the daily demand of a home for showering, bathing or cooking.

Advantages of gas hot water
  • Economical: gas is more economical than electricity, you will achieve greater savings using it. They do have a higher upfront cost but are more efficient on the long run.
  • Reliable: as they do not depend on a tank to heat the water as in the case of electric water heaters, the hot water never runs out during use. They also have a long service life. Digital versions can last from 15 to 30 years. Mechanical operating models have a service life of 8 to 10 years.
  • It is not necessary to have a large space to install a gas water heater. Gas water heaters can be installed in houses or flats, even in the smallest ones, as the equipment will not take up much space. The devices are not large, have a modern design and their weight generally does not exceed 20 kg.

Electric hot water

Electric water heaters are hot water tanks for sanitary use. To operate, they only need to be connected to the domestic water supply and plugged to an electric socket. They are different from gas water heaters in that the water is not heated instantaneously as it passes through the appliance, so they cannot provide unlimited hot water.

Advantages of Electric hot water
  • Constant temperature. Unlike gas heaters, in which the temperature will depend on the heat generated and the water flow.
  • Simple installation. The only thing you need is an electrical outlet. They do not require a gas installation.
  • Works with any flow rate. This avoids pressure problems, as well as has the advantage of not having to flush a large quantity of water to keep it hot.
  • Safety. As there is no gas installation required, there are less risks involved.

How to tell if my hot water system is broken?

Over its lifetime, which is estimated to be between 10 and 12 years, with some models being able to last up to 15 years, a water heater can have a number of faults. Some will not be very obvious, and it may be a while before you realise there is a problem.

Here are some of the signs that your water heater might be broken. It will help you know the right time to repair or replace your old water heater:

1. No Hot water?

When your system does not heat or does not light up and only produces sparks, before calling a professional you should check the gas system and make sure there is no lack of gas in your boiler.

If your system is electric you should check the pilot lights to see if the root of the problem is electrical and check if this is fixed by resetting it. Our specialists can come to your place in no time, to diagnose the issue and provide an efficient solution for all make and models available on the market!

2. Water Leaking?

Small leaks around the unit are often considered as acceptable as these systems tend to produce some condensation from the heat. Some models are also equipped with relief valves which are here to balance the pressure happening from reheating the water.

When there is a decent leak in the water heater, even if it is still working, it is clear that there is a problem that needs to be fixed as quickly as possible to avoid major problems.

In these cases, it will be necessary to proceed differently if it is an electric water heater than if it is a gas water heater. But in both cases, a series of measures must be taken to either fix the problem if it is not too serious.

Heaters can leak from the safety valve or the flange. These are the most common sources of water heater leaks. However, leaks can also occur at other points underneath the outer casing. In these cases, it is necessary to act quickly, because if water circulates inside the water heater, corrosion can occur and the structure of the water heater can be damaged as a result. Holes may even appear in the components or the surface of the heater.

3. Water not hot enough?

If the water in your water heater is not hot enough, the first thing to do is to check your installation. Start by checking the water temperature, ideally in the morning. It should be around 50°C.

Once the water temperature has been checked, it is necessary to ensure that the water heater is correctly installed in relation to the hot and cold water connections. Finally, the thermostat should be set to the maximum setting. Also check that the hot water outlet pipe is warm to the touch and that there are no leaks.

Before contacting a technician, it is a good idea to turn off the cold water supply and check that there is no cold water flowing back into the hot water circuit by checking each mixer tap. If the water is not hot enough, then a professional should be contacted.

4. Faulty Pilot light (gas systems only)?

Gas water heaters are equipped with a gas burner situated under the tank which is used to heat up the water in the storage tank. This is the small flame you can often see and it is called a ‘pilot light’. It burns continuously and also lights up the primary burner of the water system when needed to heat up the water in the storage tank.

The water might not be heated properly as the gas has no way to get lit on demand if the pilot light does not work as it should. If you are facing such issue with your gas system, it is best to contact a professional to have it inspected as soon as possible!

5. Noisy system?

Heating pipes sometimes make noises and this can be due to different causes. These pipe noises (banging or clanging), as well as being annoying, are sometimes indicative of a problem in the pipe network which, if not treated in time, can lead to severe issues.

Noises in water installations are generally caused by differences between the temperature of the water and the temperature of the pipe, which causes the pipes to expand.

Another reason may be an incorrect dimensioning of the pipe cross-section. The use of pipes with smaller diameters than required alters the velocity and pressure that the water needs to circulate normally through the system.

Heating pipe noises are your home’s way of telling you that there is something wrong. That is why we recommend that you listen to it and try to locate the main causes of these noises in the heating pipes:

  • Dilation and contraction of the pipes: When hot water passes through the pipes, usually made of copper or iron, it causes this material to expand and contract. This usually occurs when there are temperature differences of 4 to 5 degrees. If there is not enough space around the pipe it rubs against the surrounding materials causing this noise.
  • Air introduced into the system: Whether there are air inlets from the main boiler or the water system that have not been properly vented, this air can cause noises and the heating system to not heat properly.
  • Decomposition processes: If there is organic matter and dirt inside the circuit (which is common), this can accumulate and decompose over time. This decomposition generates gases that are responsible for the noise in the heating pipes.

There are a number of reasons why you might not have hot water in your home and we have listed the most common ones on this page or in our guides. If you have any doubt and require assistance to assess the situation, don’t hesitate to contact us.

The 2 most common hot water systems are powered by gas or electricity. Solar is a third option available if you are looking to heat up your water for free but this system often requires either a gas or electricity boosted system for overcast days. Heat pumps are another alternative available.

If you are already equipped with solar panels, then solar is a great cost effective option. Gas continuous flow systems usually offer the best return on investment as they are reliable and energy efficient with on-demand heating.

HWS cost anywhere between $500 to $7000 in Perth depending on the type of system you chose, the brand and other options. Installation is often not included in this price.

Solar gas-boosted systems and heat pumps are generally the most energy efficient systems available in Australia but they require higher upfront costs.

This mainly depends on the number of people using hot water in the house as well as other considerations explained in this guide.

As close as possible to where you water outlets are located in the house and in a sunny location for storage tanks to maximise heat collection.

This depends on the system and the brand you pick but generally between 5 to up to 25 years! We have a guide explaining everything on this topic as well as providing tips to increase the lifespan of your system.
